How to import gym equipment from China
Facts checked October 2026
Buying direct from a Chinese factory can cut equipment costs sharply, but you take on the work a distributor normally does: vetting the factory, checking quality, arranging freight and clearing customs. This is the checklist.
Where the factories are
Chinese gym equipment production is concentrated in clusters. Ningjin County, in Dezhou, Shandong, has more than 2,000 fitness equipment factories by one 2023 count, and Qingdao and Nantong (Jiangsu) host many strength and free-weight makers. Compare the factories we have checked in gym equipment manufacturers in China and OEM & private label factories.
Factory or trading company?
Many sellers on marketplaces are trading companies reselling another factory's output. Ask for the business licence and check the registered scope includes manufacturing, ask for a live video call from the production floor, and compare the factory address with the one on certificates and test reports.
Certificates and tests to ask for
Ask for ISO 9001 certificate numbers and look them up in IAF CertSearch. Ask for test reports to EN ISO 20957 for Europe or ASTM for the US, for the exact models you are buying, not a general brochure claim. Treat CE marking as a self-declaration: ask for the Declaration of Conformity.
Book a third-party pre-shipment inspection before paying the balance, and agree in the contract what counts as a defect.
Minimums, lead times and warranty
Factories quote minimums per product, colour or logo. Published examples from factories in our directory: YR Fitness asks for no minimum on a trial order and one 20-foot container for later orders; Ningbo Xdumbbell prints logos free from 100 pieces and quotes about one month's lead time after deposit.
Read the warranty start date. YR Fitness, for example, starts its warranty 60 days after the product leaves the factory, which can be before it reaches your gym.
Freight, duties and customs
Agree the Incoterm in the contract: FOB means the factory delivers to the port in China and you pay ocean freight and insurance; CIF means the factory pays freight and insurance to your destination port. Either way you pay import duties and delivery from your port.
In the US, exercise equipment falls under tariff heading 9506.91. Duty rates on goods from China include additional tariffs and have changed several times, so check the current rate for your exact items in the USITC tariff schedule or with a customs broker before ordering. US Customs and Border Protection's importer guidance covers the clearance process.
Questions
How do I import gym equipment from China?
Shortlist factories, verify they are manufacturers rather than traders, get certificates and test reports for your exact models, agree minimums, Incoterm and warranty in a contract, book a pre-shipment inspection, and use a freight forwarder and customs broker to ship and clear the goods.
Who is the best gym equipment manufacturer in China?
It depends on what you are buying: some factories specialise in plates or dumbbells, others in machines or cardio. Compare the factories we have checked, with their certificates and minimums, in gym equipment manufacturers in China.
Where is most gym equipment manufactured?
A large share is made in China, concentrated in clusters such as Ningjin County in Shandong, with Taiwan strong in cardio. Many Western brands also build in their own factories in the US, Europe and elsewhere; see gym equipment made in the USA.
